Justin Verlander Reveals How Wife Kate Upton Saved His Life

June 1, 2020

Justin Verlander – who married his supermodel wife, Kate Upton, last year – credits the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model with saving his life and career.

Verlander, a star pitcher for the Houston Astros, opened up to Bleacher Report about his relationship with Upton and how she helped guide him through his public and private struggles as an athlete.

“She didn’t treat me … . like jumping off a bridge,” Verlander, 35, said of Upton.” I was frustrated and kind of just upset with the world and trying to cover up my own s–.”

In 2014, two years after Upton and Verlander began dating, Verlander experienced a major slump due to a shoulder injury that seemed to put his career in jeopardy.Bleacher Report noted that as a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, Verlander was booed by fans, and social media commenters tried to blame Verlander’s decline on the mound on his relationship with Upton The Tone Connection.

That August, when the coach pulled him from the first inning of a game and asked him to get an MRI, Verlander thought the “end” of his career had come and cried as he walked back to the dugout.

“I don’t like to talk to people about injuries,” Wieland said.” As an athlete, you’re not supposed to…” “But [Upton] was someone I could talk to.I mean, basically a therapist.Somebody I could trust with…. worries about my career. worries about whether or not I’m going to be successful? Worries about, Can I make it? Worries about, Can I make it? Worries about what I’ve been through to get back.”

Upton, 26, has remained Wieland’s rock during these difficult times. She understands better than most what being in the center of the public eye and the target of critics can entail.

“She’s obviously dealt with a lot more in her life than I have,” says Wieland.” I mean, as a woman? In what industry? To be a celebrity like that? That was a level I hadn’t dealt with.”

With Upton’s help, Verlander went into physical rehab and learned to adjust his style of play to accommodate his aging body.

“It was so emotional,” Upton told Bleacher Report. “He was in a lot of pain, and he was just trying to find the best way to come back.”

Verlander returned to form after a few seasons, and when he was finally traded from the Tigers to the Astros during the 2017 season, he led the team to its first MLB title just a few months later.

“Who knows if I’d still be here if it wasn’t for her,” Verlander told the publication.

After beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series in November, Verlander flew with Upton to Italy, where they were married in a lavish ceremony.

“Married life was great. I married my best friend and we did everything we could to spend as much time as possible together,” Verlander told PEOPLE in March. “I couldn’t be happier, to be honest. It’s the first year of marriage and it’s lovely.”

In July, the happy couple announced that they were expecting their first child together.
