Savannah Guthrie Defends Her On-Air Hairstyle

Savannah Guthrie is missing her glam squad.

On Tuesday, the 48-year-old Today show anchor responded to a social media user who said her natural hair was a “distraction” during a recent broadcast, admitting the new coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic forced her to do it herself.

“@SavannahGuthrie Cmon. can’t you afford a hairdresser with the money they pay you? I like the natural unadorned look, but it’s a distraction on @NBCNews national news,” the man wrote on Twitter.

Guthrie replied.” We’ve all been doing our hair and makeup during the epidemic. Yes, it shows!”

During the big flu, we all do our own hair and makeup. Yes, it shows!

Fans were quick to defend Guthrie, thanking the news anchor for her hard work and at-home broadcasts during the global health crisis.

“With or without your hair and makeup team, you are a role model for many of us. Thank you for all your hard work. Loved tonight’s newscast.” Someone said.

A second added: “Dallas and the female reporters and anchors do their best to dress up, but it never seems to be enough. No matter the paycheck, it’s never easy. Savannah works hard and looks great.”

The social media user who sparked the issue later apologized for criticizing Guthrie’s appearance, tweeting, “I didn’t mean to. I’ve worked in TV for 32 years. I’m just amazed make-up artists will let hair slide for 2 days on national TV. You look great. Its hair that needs a little love. We love you in Puerto Rico! #mujeresalpoder”

In April, the NBC anchor spoke to PEOPLE about trying to maintain a normal morning routine while locked in the house during the pandemic – even though she was in the house “in baggy pants and no shoes” like the rest of us.

Guthrie says she already knows how to be glamorous after years of working in low-key broadcast journalism, but jokes that she’s “kind of stuck in the ’80s and ’90s” when it comes to hair and makeup trends.

“I just pour it on and hope for the best, I’m not that good at doing my hair and makeup,” she added.” But I’m just trying to do the best I can.”
